Scientific name: Triplochiton scleroxilon
Origin: Africa
Local names: arere, wawa, samba, ayous
Description: Yellowish white to light yellow, heartwocd sometimes darker. The sapwood is not demarcated. The grain is usually interlocked, giving a faint stripe on quartered surfaces.
Mechanical properties: The bending and crushing strengths arc low, stiffness and resistance to shock loads very low. Steam bending classification moderate to poor due to slight wrinkling at edges of bends, even with supporting strap.
Workability: Very easy to work with hand or machine tools, with only a slight blunting effect on cutters. Nails easily but has poor holding qualities; gluing is good. Requires I light tilling to obtain a high grade finish.
Uses: Extensively used where durability and strength are unimportant, such as for interior handrails and balustrade, drawer sides, cabinet framing, interior joinery, model making, etc. Rotary cut into reconstructed veneer and plywood. Selected logs sliced for decorative veneers.
Density: 380 kg/m3 at 12 % moisture content Monnin hardness: 1.1 Total tangential shrinkage: 5.0 % Total radial shrinkage: 2.9 % Stability: moderately stable to stable Modulus of elasticity: 7260 MPa Durability: non-durable.
